Street

I enjoy shooting street. It's the most challenging of genres for me because of the comfort zone thing, i.e. I'm waay outside it! I think that means it's an area for personal growth and that I should keep doing it. It's for sure my favourite genre to consume, but to do it well is crazy hard.

    Fishing

There was a group of people fishing with handlines at Brodick pier so I did some stealth Island Street with the 400mm zoom lens. This was an interesting shot in terms of composition. THe couple are actually in the middle of the frame vertically speaking, and there is some really cool seaweed on the wall below them, but this square crop seems to work better.

    Schoolgirl

This girl was walking home from school as I was about to turn up the hill to my house. The 400mm zoom lens is fun for long shots without getting captured, kind of island street! Only thing is that it's huge, so not really great for close quarter street! I'm gonna use it more though for this sort of thing and see if I can improve composition, lighting environment etc.

    Girl at Kames Korner

Here's the girl coming to meet the guy outside the Post Office. I like the way her hair is lit up at the back - the sun was getting low and shining right on her back. It was lovely. Shame she's not a little sharper though, but holding that 400mm zoom and composing a shot isn't easy! Thankfully it's a VR lens!

    Dude meeting his girlfriend

I was waiting for Lorraine to pick me up after work and, not having shot anything suitalbe today, was looking for passers by to capture. This guy was meeting two girls at the corner. It's the writing that really makes this shot for me, and it wasn't intentional at all. But I'll keep it in mind in future!

My friend and Calmac employee Kirstie S. She shoots too, but she's gone all fancy and mirorless. Check out her Flickr feed. Some of her shots of the Arran Mountain Rescue Team, of which she is a member, are stunning! http://www.flickr.com/photos/54836781@N02/

    Jesus vs Buckfast

This guy was on Buchanan Street ranting about alcohol and using Buckfast as an example. Jesus is the way. It was interesting for five minutes, given my eight years in AA. I wonder if this guy is in AA as well? I should've stopped for a blether, but he was a bit ranty. The dude in front of him tried arguing his case but gave up in the end and walked off in the huff.

  • Celtic kids

    Celtic kids

I suppose mothers should be able to dress their kids however they choose, but to bring them up into that? It just perpetuates the sectarianism in my view, for whatever that's worth.

  • Bus stop

    Bus stop

Some of the backgrounds that Charles Hamilton uses on Flickr really form his images. I haven't worked up the courage yet to engage with people -- I'm not sure whether I'll ever manage to get over that. But I did have the poster on the bus stop in mind when I took this shot. Of course, because I'm trying to sneak the shots, which is very difficult, I'm not giving myself time to compose the shot properly. That was the thinking behind this one anyway.

Just after the book shop, I was fired up after looking through a pile of photography books and, as I walked a bit further along Piccadilly, I saw this group of people taking selfies and thought it would make an interesting street shot.
