The bronze statues in the vineyards of the meditteranean biome at Eden Project are wonderful, depicting the Rites of Dionysus. The Rites of Dionysus The Rites of Dionysus by Tim Shaw depicts fourteen life-size copper beaten figures: Dionysus, the Greek god of the vines presides over the writhing forms of his followers – the Maenads. The Dionysian myths are amongst the oldest and most potent stories that link mankind with nature. Not only do they serve as an insight into ancient civilisations, but they also articulate truths of human nature that resonate with veracity to this day – beneath the veneer of everyday society lie dark and powerful forces of unpredictable magnitude. We chose to commission Dionysus so he could sit between the wild and cultivated lands, a reminder of the need for balance, a reminder of how delicate that balance is. Eve is made mostly of clay from Eden itself. Inside she has a galvanised steel armature, and her hair was planted with Stipa tenuissima. She was created by brother and sister team Peter and Sue Hill, who have made many stunning living sculptures out of earth and plants, including the sleeping mermaid and a giant’s head at the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
